Broadband

When can I get full fibre broadband?

The availability of full fibre broadband depends on your location and whether the infrastructure has been installed in your area. You can check if full fibre is available for your business by using the Openreach Fibre Checker: https://www.openreach.com/fibre-checker.

If full fibre isn’t available yet, Openreach may have plans to expand coverage in your area. In the meantime, Keytech can help you explore alternative high-speed broadband options. Let us know if you'd like assistance!

Is it worth upgrading to fibre broadband?

Upgrading to fibre broadband is absolutely worth it for businesses, especially if you rely on the internet for daily operations. Here’s why:

  1. Faster Speeds: Fibre broadband offers significantly higher download and upload speeds, enabling faster file sharing, smoother video conferencing, and quicker access to cloud-based applications.

  2. Improved Reliability: Fibre is more stable and less prone to disruptions compared to traditional copper-based connections, ensuring consistent performance even during peak times.

  3. Scalability: As your business grows, fibre can handle increased demand, supporting more users and devices without compromising speed or quality.

  4. Enhanced Productivity: Faster and more reliable internet means less downtime, fewer frustrations, and more efficient workflows for your team.

  5. Future-Proofing: Fibre broadband is built to support the evolving needs of businesses, including advanced technologies like VoIP and cloud computing.

If your business relies on tools like Microsoft 365, VoIP phone systems, or cloud backups, upgrading to fibre ensures you’re getting the most out of these services. You can check availability in your area using the

Which broadband providers use Openreach?

Many broadband providers in the UK use Openreach's network to deliver their services. These include major brands like BT, Sky, TalkTalk Business, Vodafone, and Plusnet, among others. Openreach provides the infrastructure, but the service and billing come from the provider you choose, such as Keytech.

At Keytech, we leverage Openreach's network to offer reliable broadband solutions tailored to your business needs. Let me know if you'd like more details about our services!

What broadband speed do I need?

The broadband speed your business needs in the UK depends on the size of your team and how you use the internet. Here's a quick guide:

  • Small businesses (1-10 employees): For general browsing, emails, and occasional video calls, speeds of 10-50 Mbps should suffice.
  • Medium businesses (10-50 employees): For regular video conferencing, cloud services, and file sharing, aim for speeds of 50-200 Mbps.
  • Large businesses (50+ employees): For heavy usage, such as running multiple cloud-based apps and hosting large-scale video meetings, you’ll need speeds of 200 Mbps or more, or even a leased line for dedicated bandwidth.

If you're unsure, Keytech can help assess your needs and recommend the right broadband solution for your business in the UK. Contact us to explore your options.

What broadband providers are in my area?

In your area, the main broadband infrastructure providers are Openreach, Kcom, CityFibre, and Virgin. These companies supply the physical infrastructure for broadband services. However, your broadband service provider—the company that bills you—could be one of many, including Keytech.

At Keytech, we work with a range of major telecoms, allowing us to offer tailored broadband solutions for businesses. We handle everything from setup to support, ensuring you get the best service for your needs. Let us know if you'd like to learn more about our broadband packages!

How to check your broadband speed?

Here’s a quick guide for businesses in the UK to check your broadband speed:

  1. Use an Online Speed Test Tool: Visit websites like Speedtest.net or Fast.com. These tools can quickly measure your download and upload speeds.

  2. Connect Directly to Your Router: For the most accurate results, connect your device to your router using an Ethernet cable. Avoid Wi-Fi for testing, as it can be affected by interference.

  3. Close Background Apps: Ensure no other devices or applications are using the internet during the test to get an accurate reading.

  4. Compare to Your Plan: Check the results against the speeds promised by your provider. If there’s a significant difference, it could indicate an issue.

  5. Test at Different Times: Run tests at various times of the day to spot patterns in speed fluctuations, as peak usage times can affect performance.

If you’re experiencing consistently slow speeds, Keytech can help diagnose and resolve the issue. Get in touch with us if you'd like assistance with this.

  2. Proactive Maintenance: RMM tools can automate updates, patches, and routine maintenance tasks to keep systems secure and running smoothly.

  4. Remote Support: It enables IT teams to troubleshoot and fix issues without needing to visit the client’s site, saving time and reducing downtime.

  5. Reporting: RMM provides detailed reports on system performance, uptime, and completed maintenance tasks, helping businesses stay informed about their IT environment.

VoIP

When will VoIP take over?

oIP is set to become the standard for phone communication as the UK transitions away from traditional analogue phone lines. Openreach has announced the switch-off of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) by January 2027, meaning all businesses and homes will need to switch to digital phone lines, such as VoIP, before then.

This move is part of the UK's upgrade to a fully digital network, offering better call quality, advanced features, and cost savings. If your business hasn’t transitioned yet, now is the time to start planning.

You can learn more about the switch-off and what it means for your business on the Openreach website: https://www.openreach.com/upgrading-the-UK-to-digital-phone-lines/for-my-home-or-business.

Let us know if you’d like assistance with switching to VoIP and ensuring your business is ready for the change!

Do you need a PBX for VoIP?

No, you don’t need a PBX (Private Branch Exchange) for VoIP with Keytech Hosted Voice.

A PBX is a traditional on-premises phone system that manages call routing, extensions, and other telephony features within an organisation. While PBX systems were once essential for business phone networks, they come with significant hardware, maintenance, and upgrade costs.

With Keytech Hosted Voice, all these functions are handled via BT-backed hosted servers in the cloud. This means there’s no need for bulky PBX hardware on-site. Our system offers the same advanced features—like call routing, voicemail, and conferencing—without the hassle of maintaining physical equipment.

Get in touch if you would like to learn more about how Keytech Hosted Voice can streamline your business communications.

Do VoIP phones work over Wi-Fi?

Yes, VoIP phones can work over Wi-Fi, but it’s important to let us know at the time of ordering. To make them wireless, we’ll need to provide either Wi-Fi-enabled handsets or a Wi-Fi dongle for standard VoIP phones.

However, it’s worth noting that even with Wi-Fi functionality, IP phones still require power to operate. If your office setup includes Power over Ethernet (PoE), the phones can draw power directly from the network cable; doing this would stop the need for wireless connectivity. Otherwise, a separate power adapter or power source will be needed for each handset.

Let us know your requirements, and we’ll ensure the right handsets and setup are provided for your business!

Will VoIP work with Starlink?

Yes, VoIP can work with Starlink, but based on our experience, the latency with Starlink can cause noticeable delays during calls. This often leads to periods of silence, as one side may not hear the other immediately, resulting in a less seamless conversation.

While Starlink offers high-speed internet and low latency compared to other satellite providers, this delay can still impact the overall call quality, especially for businesses relying on smooth communication.

If you're considering using Keytech Hosted Voice with Starlink, we recommend assessing your internet performance first. Let us know if you'd like assistance in evaluating your setup or exploring alternative broadband options for optimal VoIP performance.

What does VoIP mean?

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It’s a technology that allows you to make and receive phone calls over the internet instead of using traditional phone lines.

For businesses, VoIP systems like Keytech Hosted Voice offer several advantages, including lower costs, flexibility to work from anywhere, and advanced features like call forwarding, voicemail-to-email, and video conferencing. It’s an efficient and scalable solution for modern communication needs.

Contact us if you would like to know more about how VoIP can benefit your business.

Are VoIP phone calls free?

VoIP phone calls aren’t completely free, but they are significantly more cost-effective than traditional phone systems. With Keytech Hosted Voice, each handset comes with 5,000 free minutes per month to 01, 02, 03, and UK mobile numbers, including 03 numbers (subject to conditions).

This makes VoIP an excellent choice for businesses looking to reduce costs while enjoying advanced features like call forwarding, voicemail-to-email, and remote accessibility.
